Aposelemi Dam technical failure disrupts water supply in Crete

The Organization of Crete Development (OAK) has begun the gradual restoration of the Aposelemi Dam following a technical failure on the night of Thursday, August 13. The disruption was caused by a voltage drop in the electrical supply network, which affected the unit's operation and hindered water supply to local water supply organizations (DEYA).

The outage has caused significant concern in the municipalities of Heraklion, Hersonissos, and Agios Nikolaos. Heraklion relies on the dam for approximately 12,000 cubic meters of water daily, representing about 30% of its needs. The impact is expected to be more acute in Hersonissos and Agios Nikolaos due to high tourist demand during the summer season.

OAK technical teams are working to restore water supply to the affected areas in the coming hours. The organization noted that recent maintenance work helped minimize the impact of the incident and emphasized the importance of stable electrical networks during periods of high demand.
