Saint Thomas the Apostle Orthodox calendar Name days Christian tradition Apostle Thomas

The Orthodox Church celebrates the feast day of Saint Thomas the Apostle on October 6, 2026. Thomas, one of the twelve disciples of Jesus Christ, is widely recognized in Christian tradition for his initial doubt regarding the Resurrection. According to the Gospels, he refused to believe that Jesus had risen until he could personally see and touch the wounds from the crucifixion. This event led to the common epithet ‘Doubting Thomas,’ though the tradition emphasizes that his encounter ultimately resulted in a profound confession of faith.

Following the Pentecost, tradition holds that Thomas traveled extensively to spread the Gospel, reaching as far as India and Persia. In India, he is credited with establishing early Christian communities before eventually being martyred.

In addition to Saint Thomas, the religious calendar for October 6 honors other figures, including the martyr Ertheides and Saint Kendeas. The day is also observed as a name day for individuals named Thomas, Tom, or Thomai in various Eastern Orthodox traditions.
