Apostolic Nuncio visits Camerino to mark 10th anniversary of earthquake
Monsignor Edgar Peña Parra, the Apostolic Nuncio to Italy and San Marino, visited Camerino to commemorate the tenth anniversary of the 2016 earthquake sequence. The event, organized by Archbishop Francesco Massara, brought together religious leaders, regional officials, and representatives from Caritas and the Superintendency.
During a solemn Mass at the Basilica of San Venanzio, the Nuncio conveyed the spiritual closeness of Pope Leo XIV, honoring the victims and reflecting on the damage caused by the seismic activity that began on August 24, 2016. He emphasized the collaborative efforts between the State, the Church, and civil society, expressing hope that local towns will be fully repopulated and that young people can find futures in these internal areas to combat depopulation.
The commemoration included a visit to the Diocesan Museum “Monsignor Giacomo Boccanera,” which has seen over 11,700 visitors since its reopening a year ago. In the Archdiocese of Camerino-San Severino, 231 planned interventions on religious buildings are scheduled, with a budget exceeding 149 million euros.
