Apostolos Tzitzikostas outlines vision for European railways at InnoTrans 2026
European Commissioner for Sustainable Transport and Tourism Apostolos Tzitzikostas outlined a strategic vision for the future of European railways during the InnoTrans 2026 exhibition in Berlin. Speaking at the opening ceremony, the Commissioner emphasized a tripartite focus on safety, innovation, and competitiveness to modernize the continent's rail network.
Key priorities for the European Commission include expanding high-speed rail connections, simplifying ticket issuance, and strengthening passenger rights. The Commissioner also called for the removal of barriers preventing a unified European railway market and advocated for the support of the European rail industry through fair global competition and continuous innovation.
To achieve these goals, the Commission is working with member states and investors to identify priority projects and financing solutions for both infrastructure and rolling stock. The ultimate objective is to make rail the most attractive option for both passengers and freight by offering better services, lower costs, and improved infrastructure capable of meeting future challenges.
