App helps caregivers manage dementia-related behavioral symptoms

A study conducted by UC Davis Health and Drexel University has found that the WeCareAdvisor app can help caregivers manage behavioral symptoms associated with dementia, such as aggression, anxiety, and wandering. The research, published in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society, indicates that using the app reduces caregiver distress and improves overall well-being.

The app utilizes the DICE Approach (Describe, Investigate, Create, and Evaluate), a systematic, non-drug method that guides caregivers through identifying behaviors, investigating underlying causes, and creating effective strategies. This technology-based intervention aims to provide caregivers with the knowledge and confidence to address symptoms without relying solely on medication.

Managing behavioral changes is a significant challenge in Alzheimer's care. Common changes include mood swings, depression, wandering, and physical aggression. These behaviors can be influenced by various factors, including stress, pain, infections, or environmental changes. Caregivers are encouraged to maintain simple routines, avoid arguing, and focus on the individual's feelings to help mitigate these challenges.
