Appalachian coal mine pollution used to extract rare earth elements
Researchers in the Appalachian region of the United States are extracting rare earth elements from acid mine drainage caused by former coal mining operations. This toxic, metal-heavy runoff, which typically harms the environment, contains strategic minerals essential for manufacturing high-strength magnets used in electric vehicles, wind turbines, drones, and fighter jets.
This extraction process serves a dual purpose: environmental remediation and resource recovery. At a pilot facility in Mount Storm, researchers use a treatment process to eliminate pollutants and extract a rare earth concentrate. This method aims to address a critical national shortage of raw materials, particularly the ‘heavy’ rare earth elements that are difficult to obtain and currently subject to a near-monopoly by China.
Washington views the current global reliance on Chinese production and refining as a significant security risk. While the U.S. operates the Mountain Pass mine in California, it primarily produces ‘light’ rare earth elements. Developing domestic sources from industrial waste like mine drainage is seen as a way to reduce geopolitical dependency and bolster the domestic supply chain.
