Appin region experiences series of earthquakes
The Appin region in Australia has experienced a series of seismic events, with approximately eight earthquakes recorded within a three-week period following a magnitude 3.4 tremor on August 28.
Recent activity includes a magnitude 1.5 tremor on September 19 and a magnitude 0.8 quake later that day. Other recorded events include a magnitude 2.4 quake on September 9 and several smaller tremors between September 21 and September 22. Most of these events originated at shallow depths, some as little as two to five kilometers below the surface.
Geoscience Australia stated that these earthquakes are “likely all related,” noting that larger tremors often trigger subsequent smaller events as the Earth's crust adjusts to changes in stress. Experts indicated that while a larger earthquake can occasionally follow such a sequence, historical data suggests that the magnitude and frequency of earthquakes typically decrease over time.
