Apple Acquires AI Startup Q.ai for $1.6 Billion

Apple Inc. completed the purchase of Q.ai, an artificial‑intelligence company, for a reported $1.6 billion. Q.ai was founded in 2022 by Aviad Maizels, Yonatan Wexler and Avi Barliya to develop machine‑learning systems that improve audio in noisy settings, recognize whispered speech and interpret subtle facial movements. Maizels previously co‑founded PrimeSense, an Israeli motion‑sensing startup that Apple bought in 2013 for about $350 million and later used in technologies such as Face ID. Israeli venture‑capitalist Eden Shochat, who first backed PrimeSense, invested in Q.ai after seeing Maizels’ new work. The acquisition underscores Apple’s ongoing effort to strengthen its on‑device AI capabilities.

The deal was highlighted in an analysis of how large tech firms acquire emerging AI firms before they reach public markets, illustrating a pattern of strategic purchases that can generate significant value for investors.
