Apple acquires sensor startup Sonera to advance neural monitoring
Apple has acquired Sonera, a California-based startup specializing in breakthrough biomagnetic sensing technology. The acquisition, which was disclosed via a European Commission filing, involves the integration of Sonera’s specialized talent and assets.
Sonera developed the S1 chip, a compact sensor capable of non-invasively measuring the weak magnetic fields generated by brain and muscle activity. Unlike traditional methods that require direct skin contact or bulky cooling systems, Sonera’s technology uses acoustic-guided ferromagnetic resonance to detect signals at room temperature. This allows the sensors to be small enough for integration into consumer wearable devices.
The technology has diverse potential applications, including advanced prosthetic control, continuous monitoring of neuromuscular conditions, tracking sports performance, and discovering disease biomarkers. For Apple, this could lead to significant enhancements in health monitoring for the Apple Watch or new control interfaces for devices like the Vision Pro.
