Apple adds generative AI tools to iOS 27 Photos app

Apple announced that iOS 27 will bring three generative AI features to the Photos application: an enhanced Clean tool for removing unwanted people or objects, an Extend tool that can enlarge a photo by up to 25 % and fill the added area with AI‑generated background, and a Spatial Reframe tool that changes perspective while keeping the main subject's face unchanged. Camera chief Jon McCormack said the functions are deliberately limited to avoid unrestricted manipulation, and Apple plans to embed DeepMind’s SynthID watermark later this year so that AI‑edited images carry a machine‑readable tag for authenticity verification.

The features are available in the iOS 27 developer beta for compatible iPhone models. Early testing reported that Clean now removes passers‑by more precisely, Extend fills expanded space convincingly, and Spatial Reframe adjusts angles smoothly, though the beta may still be unstable for everyday use.
