Apple agrees to $1.25 million settlement over Canadian gift card fraud allegations
Apple has agreed to a $1.25 million settlement to resolve a class-action lawsuit in Canada regarding alleged gift card fraud. The lawsuit, filed in Ontario, claimed that Apple Inc., Apple Value Services LLC, and Apple Canada Inc. could have done more to prevent third-party scammers from defrauding customers using iTunes, App Store, or Apple Music gift cards.
The plaintiffs alleged that Apple had the capability to flag suspicious transactions or reverse transfers to fraudsters but failed to do so, and subsequently refused to refund victims who were tricked into sharing redemption codes.
Apple denies all allegations of wrongdoing and maintains it had no responsibility to provide refunds for scams perpetrated by third parties. The settlement agreement was approved by the Ontario Superior Court of Justice on September 16, 2026.
To be eligible for a claim, individuals must be in Canada and have purchased qualifying gift cards between January 1, 2016, and September 16, 2026, and suffered a loss that was not otherwise compensated.
