Instead, they appear to capture synchronized RGB still images from both the left and right earbuds to provide a dual-perspective view for AI processing. The code indicates two capture modes: an ‘active’ mode producing roughly 1-megapixel images and a ‘passive’ mode for background environmental awareness using lower resolutions.

Despite recent leaked demo videos suggesting an imminent release, reports indicate that the camera-equipped AirPods are likely delayed until 2027 as Apple works to resolve technical and privacy challenges. To address privacy concerns, the hardware may include a physical indicator light to signal when the sensors are active.
