Apple AirPods with cameras expected to launch in 2027

Technical leaks from macOS 26.7 code have revealed details regarding upcoming Apple AirPods equipped with camera sensors. These sensors are reportedly designed to support Visual Intelligence, allowing Siri to analyze the user's environment, recognize objects, and provide contextual information.

Unlike traditional cameras, these sensors are not intended for recording video or taking high-resolution photographs. Instead, they appear to capture synchronized RGB still images from both the left and right earbuds to provide a dual-perspective view for AI processing. The code indicates two capture modes: an ‘active’ mode producing roughly 1-megapixel images and a ‘passive’ mode for background environmental awareness using lower resolutions.

Despite recent leaked demo videos suggesting an imminent release, reports indicate that the camera-equipped AirPods are likely delayed until 2027 as Apple works to resolve technical and privacy challenges. To address privacy concerns, the hardware may include a physical indicator light to signal when the sensors are active.

Public sentiment regarding such technology remains cautious; a survey of 1,000 Americans found that 72% are worried about being secretly recorded by camera-equipped wearables, and 60% expressed distrust in manufacturers regarding data privacy.
