Apple and Google introduce new privacy alerts for Bluetooth trackers and phone verification

Apple and Google have added privacy‑focused alerts to iPhone and Android devices. On iOS and Android, the system now detects unknown Bluetooth trackers that move with the user and issues a warning such as “an object is moving with you” (iPhone) or “unknown tracker detected” (Android). The feature follows the DULT (Detecting Unwanted Location Trackers) specification released in May 2024 and works on iOS 14.5+ for Apple’s AirTag and on iOS 17+ for third‑party tags, while Android devices running version 6.0 or later also receive the alerts. Brands including Chipolo and eufy have pledged compatibility.

Google’s Android also shows a “Number is now verified” notification that confirms the SIM card associated with a phone number is present in the device. This verification underpins the Rich Communication Services (RCS) messaging standard, enables two‑factor authentication, account recovery, emergency services, and device location features. The check runs continuously while the SIM is active and ceases after about eight days if the SIM is removed.
