Apple and WhatsApp introduce new interface features for foldable and tablet displays

Apple’s new iPhone Duo features a split-screen capability on its 7.6-inch internal foldable display. However, unlike the iPad’s Split View, users cannot resize the windows. The central divider remains fixed at a 50/50 split. This design choice is likely due to the 1:1.4 aspect ratio shared by both the internal and external screens, ensuring that each half of the foldable display matches the dimensions of the external screen. The only exception is vertical video content, which maintains its original aspect ratio while other apps may extend beyond the fold.

Separately, WhatsApp is rolling out a new interface for iPad users that introduces a Mac-style sidebar. This layout replaces the bottom tab bar to better utilize the tablet’s larger screen, allowing for simultaneous access to navigation, chat lists, and active conversations. The sidebar can be hidden to maximize reading and writing space. The update is currently being distributed through beta testing and the public App Store version.
