Apple announces upcoming M6 chip with higher performance and limited product rollout

Apple is set to launch its next-generation M6 chip later in 2024. The processor will feature increased memory bandwidth of about 200 GB/s, a redesigned GPU with up to 12 cores, and enhanced on‑device AI capabilities. Apple plans to release only a base‑model version of the M6, abandoning the Pro, Max and Ultra variants that have accompanied previous generations.

The new chip is expected to power the next MacBook Air slated for a spring 2024 release, with projected starting prices of $1,299 for the 13‑inch model and $1,499 for the 15‑inch model. Supply‑chain constraints and rising production costs are likely to influence pricing. Apple has also tested the M6 in an updated MacBook Pro prototype, though broader product rollout remains uncertain.
