Android manufacturers adopt Apple battery technology

Android smartphone manufacturers, including Xiaomi and Honor, are reportedly preparing to adopt Apple’s “metal-can” battery technology to significantly increase device battery capacity.

Traditional lithium-ion batteries use soft aluminum pouches that expand during charging, requiring manufacturers to leave empty space within devices. In contrast, Apple’s patented rigid metal casing mechanically limits this expansion. This allows battery cells to be packed more densely within the same volume, enabling much higher energy density.

By combining this metal-can design with silicon-carbon battery structures, manufacturers aim to reach capacities of 9,000 to 10,000 mAh or more without increasing the physical thickness of flagship smartphones. This technology, which Apple has utilized in various Apple Watch and iPhone models, also offers improved mechanical durability and better heat dissipation.
