Cybersecurity threats escalate via AI phishing and targeted spyware

Cybersecurity threats are evolving through the use of artificial intelligence and sophisticated social engineering. AI-powered phishing has reportedly increased by 341 percent in six months, with a high percentage of phishing emails now being AI-generated to increase credibility.

Security agencies have issued specific warnings regarding targeted attacks. Apple is notifying iPhone users in 110 countries who may be targets of professional spyware, recommending the use of Lockdown Mode. Meanwhile, Israeli intelligence services Shin Bet and the National Cyber Directorate have warned of Iranian-linked phishing campaigns targeting journalists via WhatsApp and Telegram to gain control of mobile devices.

Cybercriminals are also masquerading as trusted workplace tools. Kaspersky reported nearly 4.8 million attack attempts in one year where malware disguised itself as platforms like Zoom, Outlook, and Microsoft Teams.

In response to privacy concerns and platform management, WhatsApp is introducing optional usernames to allow users to hide their phone numbers, though the service remains tied to a mobile number for Meta's internal identification. Additionally, WhatsApp continues to enforce strict policies against automated messaging and unauthorized third-party applications to prevent account bans.
