Apple scraps Extreme chips and ends Mac Pro line

Apple has discontinued the Mac Pro after a 20‑year run and cancelled the development of two high‑performance processors, the M2 Extreme and M3 Extreme, that were intended to sit above the Ultra tier. According to Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman, the “Extreme” chips would have offered twice as many CPU and GPU cores as the M2 Ultra and M3 Ultra, respectively – for example, an M2 Extreme was expected to have 48 CPU cores and up to 152 GPU cores. Gurman said the projected cost of an Extreme‑based Mac Pro could have exceeded $10,000, making it a niche product with limited demand. Apple also scrapped two unreleased Mac Pro models: a codenamed J170 version that would have used an Intel Xeon processor, and a J190 version that would have employed an M3 Ultra chip alongside the planned M3 Ultra‑equipped Mac Studio. The company cited high production costs and weak market interest as the primary reasons for abandoning both the Extreme chips and the new Mac Pro designs, opting instead to focus on the Mac Studio and future Ultra‑class silicon.
