Apple CarPlay uses Bluetooth and Wi-Fi for wireless connectivity

Wireless Apple CarPlay utilizes a combination of Bluetooth and Wi-Fi technologies to manage different aspects of the connection. Bluetooth is primarily responsible for the initial pairing process, allowing the iPhone and the vehicle to recognize each other and establish a connection. Once the devices are paired, the car provides the necessary information for the iPhone to join a local Wi-Fi network.

Once the active session begins, Wi-Fi handles the high-bandwidth data transfer, including audio, video, control data, and the user interface displayed on the dashboard. Notably, even phone call audio is transmitted via Wi-Fi during an active session rather than through standard Bluetooth audio. This Wi-Fi connection is a direct local network between the phone and the car and does not require an external internet connection or a public hotspot.

Bluetooth remains active in a supporting role to facilitate reconnection during subsequent drives or to help re-establish the link if the Wi-Fi connection is dropped. For the initial setup, users can either use a USB cable to handle the pairing or ensure both Bluetooth and Wi-Fi are enabled to pair wirelessly through the vehicle settings.
