Apple celebrates 25th anniversary of the iPod with interactive digital tribute

To mark the 25th anniversary of the original iPod, Apple has released an interactive digital recreation of the first-generation device. Hidden within the 404 error pages of the Apple Music website, the virtual player allows users to navigate menus and use the iconic mechanical scroll wheel via a web browser.

The digital tribute includes 90-second song previews from artists popular during the early 2000s. Users can also unlock a digital version of the classic game Breakout by holding the center button in the “About” section.

Originally unveiled by Steve Jobs on October 23, 2001, the first iPod featured a 5GB hard drive and was marketed with the promise of “1,000 songs in your pocket.” The device cost $399 and initially required a Mac for synchronization via iTunes. The iPod played a pivotal role in transforming Apple from a computer manufacturer into a consumer electronics giant, eventually paving the way for the iPhone before the product line was discontinued in 2022.
