Apple celebrates iPod 25th anniversary with interactive web easter egg

To commemorate the 25th anniversary of the original iPod, Apple has introduced a hidden interactive digital replica of the device on the Apple Music website. The feature is accessible via the service’s 404 error pages, appearing when users navigate to a non-existent URL.

The virtual iPod replicates the aesthetic of the 2001 original, featuring a monochrome display and a functional click wheel. Users can navigate through menus such as Playlists, Artists, and Songs to listen to 30 to 90-second previews of nostalgic tracks from artists including Britney Spears, Daft Punk, Coldplay, and Eminem.

A secondary easter egg is embedded within the simulation; by navigating to Settings, then About, and holding the center button for five seconds, users can play “Breakout,” the classic arcade game that Apple co-founders Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak helped develop during their time at Atari. The experience is limited to web browsers and is not available within the Apple Music mobile or desktop applications.
