Apple CEO Tim Cook to step down; John Ternus named successor

Tim Cook is set to step down as CEO of Apple on September 1, 2026, after nearly 15 years in the role. He will transition to the position of Executive Chairman of the board. John Ternus, currently the Senior Vice President of Hardware Engineering, will succeed him as the new CEO.

Under Cook's leadership, Apple's market capitalization grew from approximately $350 billion in 2011 to over $4 trillion, briefly exceeding $5 trillion in July. Cook oversaw the expansion of the company's services ecosystem, including Apple Music, iCloud, and Apple Pay, which now generate over $100 billion in annual revenue. The iPhone remains a primary driver of growth, accounting for roughly $209.5 billion of the company's $416.1 billion total revenue in 2025.

In a recent symbolic meeting at Apple Park, Cook and Ternus met with representatives from The Pokémon Company, including CEO Tsunekazu Ishihara. The visit, which featured the character Pikachu, was intended to introduce the Pokémon team to Ternus and facilitate discussions regarding the gaming sector.
