Apple considered pre-configuring iPhones with user data

Apple explored a service to streamline the transition between iPhone models by pre-configuring new devices with a user’s iCloud backup before delivery. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, this concept was considered under the Apple Upgrade program, which is currently available only in the United States for customers who upgrade regularly via monthly payments.

The goal was to provide a device that is ready to use immediately upon activation, with photos, messages, and settings already present. However, the project faced technical and organizational hurdles. Key challenges included the time gap between device preparation and delivery, which could lead to data becoming outdated, and significant concerns regarding data privacy and security.
