Apple delays launch of camera‑enabled AirPods to 2026‑2027

Apple is developing a new version of its AirPods that includes tiny cameras acting as visual sensors for Siri, rather than for taking photos or video. The device will capture low‑resolution visual data to provide contextual assistance, such as identifying food items or objects in a refrigerator.

Initial plans targeted a release in the first half of 2026, but development setbacks, the need for an enhanced Siri, privacy‑related regulations in the European Union and the integration of a new 2‑nanometre A21 chip have pushed the launch window to September 2026 at the earliest, with some reports now indicating a possible delay until late 2027. The earbuds will feature external indicator lights that illuminate whenever visual data is being processed, addressing EU privacy concerns.
