Apple expands fitness tracking to AirPods Pro 3 and iPhone via iOS 27

Apple is expanding its fitness ecosystem through iOS 27, allowing users to track workouts using iPhone and AirPods Pro 3 as an alternative to the Apple Watch. Through the GymKit feature, users can sync data with compatible gym equipment, such as treadmills, to track distance, incline, speed, and calorie consumption.

The AirPods Pro 3 feature an integrated PPG sensor that emits invisible infrared light pulses 256 times per second to measure blood flow absorption, providing accurate heart rate data. This heart rate information is transmitted to the iPhone's Fitness app, which then coordinates with GymKit-enabled machines to provide a comprehensive workout summary.

While designed as a backup for users who forget their Apple Watch or have a depleted battery, the system ensures data continuity. If a user later puts on an Apple Watch, the activity rings and historical data, including average heart rate and calories burned, will automatically update to reflect the session.
