Apple expands GymKit support to iPhone with iOS 27

Apple is expanding its GymKit functionality with the release of iOS 27, allowing the iPhone to integrate with compatible gym equipment. Previously, GymKit primarily relied on the Apple Watch to synchronize data between wearable devices and exercise machines via a tap-to-connect method.

Under the new update, users can utilize the iPhone’s NFC reader to connect to compatible cardio machines. This integration allows the iPhone to act as the primary screen and data guardian for workout recordings, while AirPods Pro 3 can also incorporate heart rate data into the experience. The machine continues to provide training metrics directly to the Fitness app, completing a synchronized ecosystem between the hardware and the mobile device.
