Apple expands HomePod features with touch lock and light effects
Apple is introducing new features for its HomePod smart speakers through the upcoming HomePod software version 27.2 and iOS 27.2.
One major update is the ‘Lock Controls’ feature, which allows users to disable the touch-sensitive surface on top of the device. This is intended to prevent accidental inputs from children, pets, or ‘phantom touches.’ While the touch interface is locked, essential functions such as timers, alarms, Intercom, and FaceTime calls will remain operational via Siri or the Home app.
Additionally, Apple is adding ‘Sound Lighting’ effects. These visual animations on the top of the HomePod will react to music playback, adjusting to bass and treble while incorporating colors from album covers. These light effects will also be available for background sounds like rain.
The update is expected to support most HomePod models, including the HomePod mini and the original 2018 HomePod, though some specific compatibility details may vary by model.
