Apple explains Spotlight indexing delays on iOS 27 and macOS 27

Apple has released a support document explaining the Spotlight indexing process following major software updates to iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27. The new indexing system is designed to support enhanced search capabilities and the integration of new Siri AI features.

Because the system must rebuild its searchable catalog of apps, files, messages, and photos, the initial indexing process can take several hours or even multiple days depending on the volume of data on the device. Users may experience slower search results or increased battery consumption during this period as the system performs background tasks.

To accelerate the process, Apple recommends that users leave their devices idle, connected to a power source, and connected to the internet via Wi-Fi or Ethernet. The company emphasized that the Spotlight index is stored locally on each device to maintain privacy, meaning it is not synchronized or shared with Apple.
