Apple explores borderless iPhone design using Samsung OLED technology
Apple is reportedly exploring a borderless iPhone design that eliminates metal frames and physical buttons. To achieve this, the company is looking toward Samsung Display to develop an OLED panel capable of folding nearly 90 degrees at all four edges, effectively turning the screen into the device's sides.
This “wraparound” technology aims to create a continuous glass appearance. However, several technical hurdles remain, including optical distortions caused by the adhesive layers at the corners, the durability of the OLED encapsulation under extreme bending, and potential signal interference due to the lack of a traditional metal frame for antennas.
Speculation regarding future models, such as a potential iPhone 20 around 2026, suggests Apple may transition to this curved OLED technology to compete with existing industry standards. Such a shift could also lead to the replacement of the Dynamic Island with alternative camera solutions to enhance the immersive experience.
