Apple faces £2 billion UK lawsuit over app tracking rules
Apple is facing a £2 billion ($2.7 billion) collective action lawsuit in the UK Competition Appeal Tribunal. The claim, filed by ATT Collective Action Limited and led by former Competition and Markets Authority official Ann Pope, alleges that Apple's App Tracking Transparency (ATT) framework, introduced in 2021, unfairly discriminates against third-party developers.
Plaintiffs argue that Apple imposes stricter tracking requirements on external developers than on its own services, thereby granting its own advertising ecosystem a competitive advantage. The lawsuit seeks to compensate UK developers for losses incurred due to these policies, which they claim have disrupted business models relying on targeted advertising.
This legal action follows significant regulatory scrutiny across Europe. The German Federal Cartel Office previously determined that Apple's ATT pop-ups could encourage user consent for its own services while discouraging it for third-party apps. Additionally, Apple was fined €150 million by French authorities and faced similar investigations in Italy, Poland, and Romania regarding its tracking practices.
