Apple faces $634 million judgment and legal battles over patents and trade secrets

Apple is navigating significant legal challenges involving patent infringement and trade secret misappropriation. A federal court has entered a $634 million judgment against the company after a California jury found that Apple infringed on Masimo’s pulse-oximetry patents. This total includes approximately $184 million in prejudgment interest. Both Apple and Masimo have appealed the decision. The dispute has impacted the availability of blood-oxygen monitoring features in certain Apple Watch models within the United States.

Separately, Apple has secured expanded access to evidence in a trade secrets lawsuit against OpenAI, io Products, and two former employees, Chang Liu and Tang Tan. A judge granted Apple expedited discovery, allowing the company to access internal documents and forensic evidence. The litigation alleges that the defendants improperly used confidential information to advance OpenAI’s consumer hardware development. The discovery process will include records regarding the use of various AI tools and details concerning the handling of confidential information.
