Apple iPhone 18 Pro launch threatened by global DRAM shortage

Apple has produced about $1 billion worth of A20 Pro processors for the upcoming iPhone 18 Pro, Pro Max and the foldable iPhone Ultra, but the chips cannot be assembled because the required DRAM memory is unavailable. The shortage is driven by soaring AI data‑center demand, which has led memory makers to prioritize server‑grade chips over consumer devices.

Apple is seeking additional DRAM supplies from Micron, SK Hynix, Samsung and possibly China’s CXMT. CEO Tim Cook has said the company is “seeing very significant constraints” in the supply chain, and analysts warn that the shortage could cause stockouts at launch and push iPhone 18 Pro prices up by as much as $300. The devices are still slated for an unveiling in September 2026, but production delays remain a risk.
