Apple faces lawsuit over AirTag anti-tracking failures

Two women in Michigan have filed a lawsuit against Apple in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan, alleging that the company's AirTag anti-tracking alerts fail to provide adequate protection against stalking.

The plaintiffs claim that the tracking devices were used by former partners to monitor their locations. One woman reported that her iPhone failed to provide any alerts regarding an unknown tracker, even after an AirTag was discovered by her son in their vehicle. Another woman, who uses an Android device, discovered a tracker in her car shortly after moving to a new apartment to escape an abusive relationship.

The lawsuit alleges negligence and product design defects, noting that while Apple eventually introduced background scanning for non-iOS users, the implementation arrived too late to prevent the reported harassment.
