Apple Faces Senate Pressure to Drop Chinese Memory Chips
A bipartisan group of U.S. senators, led by Republican Jim Banks and Democrat Chuck Schumer, sent a letter to Apple CEO Tim Cook urging the company to commit by Aug 21 not to use memory chips from Chinese suppliers ChangXin Memory Technologies (CXMT) and Yangtze Memory Technologies (YMTC). The senators cite the Pentagon’s list that designates both firms as entities supporting China’s military, warning that reliance on these chips would make Apple dependent on an adversary and could undermine U.S. semiconductor investments in Indiana, Idaho, New York and Virginia.
Apple is negotiating to acquire DRAM from CXMT and NAND from YMTC to alleviate a global memory shortage driven by AI demand, which has pushed memory prices to historic highs. In June, Apple raised prices of Macs, iPads, home devices and Vision Pro, attributing the hikes to the chip shortage. The company has tested CXMT DRAM samples and is seeking approval from the Trump administration, while rival Micron has lobbied the administration to block the purchase.
The senators also asked Apple for details on its qualification process for the Chinese chips, any technical data shared with CXMT or YMTC, and whether the components would be used only in devices sold in China or globally. Apple has not responded to the request.
