Apple features include NFC power reserve and potential Wallet trade-in integration

Apple devices feature a specialized functionality known as ‘Power Reserve’ that allows certain components to remain active even after the battery has been depleted. Introduced with the iPhone XS and XR, this feature maintains a small amount of isolated current specifically for the NFC chip. This enables users who have configured ‘Express Transit’ cards—such as Suica, Pasmo, or certain Apple Pay transit cards—to continue validating transit gates even when the phone appears to be powered off.

Separately, code discovered within Apple’s ‘Guide’ application suggests the company is developing an integrated trade-in process via Apple Wallet. The proposed system would allow customers to scan a QR code provided by a retailer to save a trade-in estimate directly to their Wallet. Unlike the current 14-day window for online trade-ins, this new method could potentially allow users to hold a valid offer for up to 90 days.
