Apple, Google and Industry Push Wearables Toward Clinical Health Use

Apple’s latest smartwatch sleep tracking has drawn criticism for occasional inaccuracies, especially during periods of wakefulness or restless sleep. Independent testing shows the “sleep score” can misinterpret quiet movement as sleep, prompting Apple to emphasize that its metrics are for wellness insights, not medical diagnoses. In contrast, Google’s Pixel Watch series is shifting focus from simple step counts to holistic health metrics such as “Daily Readiness” and “Cardio Load,” aiming to guide users on recovery and activity based on heart rate, sleep quality, and recent exertion.

The SEMI Smart MedTech Initiative released a paper titled “Medicalizing Consumer Silicon,” outlining the technical and regulatory obstacles that prevent wearable biosensors from moving beyond consumer wellness into clinical practice. Contributors from companies including Intel, STMicroelectronics, Medtronic and the Mayo Clinic note that “poor integration is a primary barrier inhibiting the device performance required for clinical acceptance.” The report calls for cross‑industry collaboration to improve sensor integration, data validation, AI interoperability, and regulatory frameworks, asserting that “effective use of wearable devices can provide key health insights, help with diagnosis, aid in treatment planning, and track treatment effectiveness and adherence.”
