Apple harvests celebrated in British Columbia and the United Kingdom
Regional apple harvests are being celebrated through various initiatives in British Columbia and the United Kingdom.
In British Columbia, the BC Fruit Growers Association has launched the ‘Fresh BC Apples’ marketing campaign in partnership with the Ministry of Agriculture and Food. Running from October through mid-November, the initiative highlights local varieties such as Ambrosia, Spartan, and Sunpunch. The campaign aims to connect consumers with local growers and respond to the increasing demand for locally grown produce.
In the United Kingdom, celebrations center around ‘Apple Day,’ an annual autumn event founded by Common Ground to promote biodiversity and heritage apple varieties. Local orchards, including Mole End Farm in Kent and Carey Organics in Herefordshire, are providing diverse selections to raise awareness of food provenance and prevent the loss of traditional varieties often overshadowed by mass-market imports.
