Apple harvests in Nepal face transport and economic challenges

Apple producers in Nepal's Gorkha and Mustang districts are facing contrasting situations regarding their harvests. In the Manaslu region of northern Gorkha, significant quantities of apples are stranded in warehouses. Flooding caused by an avalanche on the Ungilung Khola destroyed bridges and road sections along the Budhigandaki River, cutting off the Benighat Arughat Larke road. While walking paths have been restored, the terrain remains impassable for mules, preventing the transport of fruit to markets. Additionally, a flood in the Therang Khola destroyed a micro hydropower plant, leaving farmers without electricity to operate apple dryers.

In the Mustang district, preliminary estimates indicate a successful harvest, with production valued at over Rs 1.14 billion. The District Agriculture and Livestock Development Office reported a total yield of 7,038.54 metric tonnes, representing a 5.29 percent increase from the previous year. This total includes 959.62 metric tonnes of hybrid apples and 6,078.92 metric tonnes of traditional local varieties. Most of the Mustang harvest, valued at approximately Rs 948 million, is expected to be sold outside the district.
