Apple I computer sets auction record at $1.15 million
A rare Apple I computer, known as the ‘Hatfield’ model, has sold at auction for a record-breaking $1,148,200. The sale was conducted by Bonhams and saw the price exceed the initial expected range of $800,000.
Built in 1976, the machine is one of only 74 verified Apple I models still in existence and is noted for being in working condition. The unit features a motherboard signed by Steve Wozniak and includes a letter from Steve Jobs. In the letter, Jobs had encouraged the original owner, Fred Hatfield, to trade in the motherboard for an upgrade to an Apple II after Hatfield expressed concerns regarding limited software options.
The auction included several period-accurate accessories, such as the original operating manual, a cassette operating manual, a custom power supply, a monitor, and keyboards. This specific machine previously sold in 2013 for approximately $671,400 to $686,000.
