Apple-1 computer to be auctioned for up to $800,000

An original, fully operational Apple-1 computer, nicknamed the ‘Hatfield’ unit, is scheduled for auction by Bonhams this October. The historic machine is estimated to sell for between $500,000 and $800,000.

Cataloged as number 48 in the official Apple-1 registry, the device is one of fewer than 75 known surviving units, with even fewer remaining in working condition. The computer features a signature from co-founder Steve Wozniak on the motherboard and is accompanied by an authentic 1978 letter signed by Steve Jobs.

The letter was originally sent to the machine’s first owner, Fred Hatfield, offering to trade the Apple-1 for an Apple II motherboard. Hatfield declined the offer, a decision that preserved the unit for decades. The computer will be available for public viewing in Los Angeles, Boston, San Francisco, and New York prior to the auction, which will accept bids from October 4 to 14.
