Apple impact damage reduces exportable production by 12%

Researchers at the University of Talca's Pomáceas Center have identified key factors contributing to “machucón,” a type of mechanical impact damage in apples that reduces exportable production by as much as 12%. This damage, which causes internal tissue destruction and dark spots, occurs during harvesting, transport, and selection processes.

Studies led by researcher Daniela Simeone indicate that lower temperatures in both the fruit and the surrounding environment during harvest increase sensitivity to impact. Additionally, the fruit's calcium levels play a critical role in the structural resistance of its tissue.

According to Patricia Marabolí, a postharvest agronomist at Dole Chile, these losses force exporters to divert fruit to domestic markets because they cannot meet export packaging requirements. The issue impacts the entire productive chain from the orchard to the processing plant.
