Apple links iCloud+ tiers to Apple Intelligence features
Apple is transitioning its iCloud+ service from a pure cloud storage model to a tiered subscription system that dictates access to Apple Intelligence features. According to findings in the iOS 27 developer beta, higher-tier iCloud+ plans will unlock expanded capabilities for AI-driven tools.
A primary application of this change is within the Home app. Users with specific iCloud+ plans will gain access to AI-generated video summaries and natural language search capabilities for HomeKit Secure Video cameras. Observations from beta testers suggest that the number of cameras supported for these AI summaries is directly tied to the storage tier, with higher plans like the 12TB tier offering greater limits.
Beyond smart home features, Apple is also implementing usage limits for other Apple Intelligence services, such as image generation in Image Playground. These limits appear to be determined by the user's subscription level, as the company utilizes expensive server-side models to power these functions. This strategy aligns Apple's cloud storage revenue with the increasing demand for generative AI capabilities.
