Apple integrates Alibaba's Qwen AI into Mac for China market
Apple has outlined a strategic integration for Mac users in mainland China to connect Alibaba's Qwen generative AI service with Siri and the system's Writing Tools. This arrangement allows users to leverage Qwen for tasks such as generating text and images from descriptions, as well as analyzing documents and photos through Siri.
The integration is intended for Macs running macOS 26.6 or later and is subject to specific regional requirements. To use the service, users must be physically located in mainland China, utilize a China-based Apple account, and possess a Mac model purchased in mainland China. Users are also required to sign in to a Qwen account to activate the extension. To address privacy concerns, Apple's documentation specifies that Alibaba is not permitted to use any materials processed through the service to train or improve its AI models.
This move comes as Apple faces increased competition in the Chinese PC market, where its market share has fallen to approximately 9%. In the first quarter, Mac shipments in mainland China dropped 9% year-on-year to around 800,000 units. Apple currently trails domestic competitors such as Lenovo, which holds a 31% market share, and Huawei, which holds 16%. While the current documentation specifically addresses Mac functionality, Alibaba has indicated that Qwen will eventually be incorporated into Apple Intelligence across other platforms, including iPhone, iPad, and Vision Pro, in the Chinese market.
