Apple integrates Face ID under the display of iPhone 18 Pro
Apple has implemented a new method to integrate the Face ID module beneath the display of the iPhone 18 Pro. To allow the TrueDepth module to emit and receive infrared light through the screen, Apple has modified the pixel arrangement in that specific area.
Technical observations, including microscopic analysis by iFixit, indicate that pixel density is reduced by half over the module to facilitate infrared passage. To prevent this area from appearing dimmer than the rest of the display, Apple compensates by increasing the brightness of those specific pixels. Additionally, an infrared filter has been placed between the pixels to block visible light while allowing infrared signals to pass, making the module nearly invisible even under close inspection.
This technological advancement allows for a reduction in the size of the Dynamic Island, enabling the device to display up to three live activities simultaneously, an increase from the two supported by previous models. While Face ID is hidden, the front-facing camera remains visible.
