Apple develops custom AI model for China with Alibaba support

Apple has developed a custom large language model specifically for the Chinese market, utilizing technical support from Alibaba Group. This strategic move marks a shift from Apple’s previous plan to rely solely on third-party Chinese models for its regional generative AI features.

Following regulatory approval from the Cyberspace Administration of China in July, Apple is expected to roll out Apple Intelligence to compatible iPhones, iPads, Macs, and Vision Pro headsets in mainland China via an upcoming iOS update. The rollout will follow a dual-track approach: Alibaba’s Qwen model will be integrated into the Apple Intelligence suite, while Apple’s own proprietary model will work alongside it to provide more control over the user experience.

Additionally, Baidu is expected to provide technology to support search-related features within the system. This localized strategy is designed to help Apple compete with domestic rivals like Huawei and navigate China’s strict regulatory environment, which requires AI services to comply with local censorship and content standards. This development makes Apple the first foreign company cleared by Beijing to offer a proprietary AI model in the country.
