Apple introduces advertisements to Apple Maps in US and Canada
Apple has begun implementing advertisements within Apple Maps for users in the United States and Canada. The rollout is currently underway for iPhone and iPad users, with a wider release expected in the coming weeks.
Advertisements will appear in two primary ways: within the ‘Suggested Places’ feature before a search is completed, or as the top result following a search. Sponsored content will be clearly identified with a blue ‘Ad’ label. Apple has stated that businesses have been bidding on keywords and search terms since early August to facilitate this feature.
Regarding privacy, Apple claims it will not use personal account data to serve these ads. Instead, the service will rely on contextual information such as search terms, approximate device location, or the specific map area being viewed. The company also noted that certain categories, such as cryptocurrency ATMs or home services like locksmiths, will not be promoted.
While some users have expressed dissatisfaction on social media platforms, noting that the lack of ads was a primary reason for using the service over competitors, Apple Maps continues to maintain advantages in battery efficiency and perceived privacy.
