Apple introduces hardware-based photo authentication for iPhone 18 Pro

Apple is introducing a new technology called ‘Apple Reference Image’ for the upcoming iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max series to combat AI-generated misinformation. The system functions as a digital negative by using the camera sensor to digitally sign every pixel at the moment of capture.

When the ‘Reference’ mode is activated, the encrypted data is processed via Apple’s Private Cloud Compute infrastructure to create an unalterable reference copy. This allows users, journalists, and forensic experts to compare the original capture against processed versions to detect digital retouching, object removal, or synthetic manipulation. To support broader industry standards, Apple is releasing Reference Image APIs for iOS, iPadOS, and macOS, and will also support Google DeepMind’s SynthID invisible watermarking.

Due to local regulatory frameworks, the ability to capture images in Reference mode will not be initially available in the European Union or China, though users in those regions may still be able to view and create these images through updated operating systems.
