Apple introduces Stolen Device Protection for iPhone users
Apple has introduced a security feature called ‘Stolen Device Protection’ to combat data theft and unauthorized access following iPhone theft or loss. This feature, integrated since the iOS 17.3 update, is designed to prevent criminals from accessing sensitive information even if they have obtained a user's screen passcode through methods like shoulder surfing.
The protection mechanism works by disabling the ability to use a passcode as a fallback for highly sensitive actions. Instead, the system mandates biometric authentication via Face ID or Touch ID for critical tasks, such as accessing the iCloud Keychain to view saved passwords. This prevents thieves from changing Apple IDs, disabling ‘Find My’ features, or accessing financial applications using only a numeric passcode.
