Apple invites developers to propose Interop 2027 web standards

Apple’s WebKit team has opened the call for proposals for Interop 2027, an annual initiative aimed at improving web technology consistency across different browsers. The project is a collaborative effort involving Apple, Google, Microsoft, Mozilla, Bocoup, and Igalia.

Developers can submit proposals via GitHub from September 3 to September 23. To be considered, submissions must focus on mature, stable web standards that are verifiable through Web Platform Tests. Proposals should address specific interoperability issues and demonstrate their impact on developers and users.

The Interop initiative, which evolved from the earlier Compat project, seeks to ensure that modern web features function identically regardless of the browser used. Previous successes include Interop 2025, where the percentage of tests passed by all participating browsers rose from 29% to 97%. For Interop 2026, 20 focus areas have already been selected, covering CSS functions, Navigation API, View Transitions, WebRTC, and WebTransport.
