Smartphone market shipments decline 20% in Q3 2026

Global smartphone shipments fell 20% year-on-year in the third quarter of 2026, reaching 254.7 million units. This represents the lowest third-quarter volume since 2013. Analysts attribute the contraction to rising memory and component costs, which have driven up retail prices and constrained consumer demand, particularly in emerging markets.

Samsung maintained its market leadership with 57.8 million shipments, a 5% year-on-year decline. Apple's shipments remained flat compared to the previous year at 56.5 million units, allowing the company to increase its market share. In contrast, Chinese manufacturers experienced significant declines: Xiaomi shipments fell 29%, OPPO fell 39%, and vivo fell 33%.

Rising costs are forcing manufacturers to shift focus toward high-end, more profitable products while reducing the number of mid-to-low-end models. This trend, often described as the retreat of the “model sea tactic,” is a response to the reality that increased component costs can consume the entire profit margin of budget devices.
